What Smart Key Programming Actually Involves
A smart key is always listening. Antennas in the doors, the boot and the cabin send out a short range signal, and when the key is close enough it answers with an encrypted code. If the code matches, the car unlocks when you touch the handle and allows the engine to start when you press the button. The cabin antennas also check the key is inside the car, which is why most cars refuse to start if the key is left on the roof.
Programming a smart key means teaching the car to trust a new key. The programmer connects through the diagnostic port under the dashboard, reads the security data the car needs, and registers the new key with the keyless system and the immobiliser. Many makes protect this step with a security code, which is read from the car during the job.
