What Is an Immobiliser and What Goes Wrong?

An immobiliser is an electronic security device required on all UK vehicles sold after 1998. When you insert the key and attempt to start, the immobiliser reads the transponder signal from the key chip. If the signal matches a code stored in the ECU, the engine starts. If not — or if the immobiliser system has a fault — the engine is prevented from starting regardless of the mechanical key.

Common immobiliser problems include: transponder chips that have failed or demagnetised, ECU communication failures between the immobiliser and engine management, corruption of key code data in ECU memory, physical damage to the immobiliser unit or wiring, and — in older vehicles — circuit board faults requiring direct chip-level intervention. For most of these, a standard OBD programmer is not enough. That is where EEPROM-level diagnostics and circuit board expertise become essential.
