What a Transponder Chip Does and Why It Needs Programming
A transponder is a tiny chip, usually inside a glass or ceramic capsule in the head of the key. It has no battery. When the key is turned in the ignition, or held near the start button, a coil around the barrel energises the chip with a short radio pulse and the chip answers with its code. The immobiliser compares that code with the keys it has stored. If the code matches, fuel and ignition are allowed. If it does not, the engine will not start, or will start for a second and then cut out.
That is why a new blade on its own is never enough on a modern car. The metal must be cut to match the locks, and the chip must be registered in the car. Programming is done through the diagnostic port under the dashboard, where the programmer reads the security information and adds the new key to the list of keys the car accepts.
Chip families include Philips ID46, Megamos ID48, Texas Crypto 4D and the Hitag AES chips used on many newer cars. Older fixed code chips are simple, while newer crypto chips exchange encrypted challenges with the car every time you start it. Transponder keys rarely fail on their own, and when they do the cause is usually physical. A key dropped on a hard floor can crack the chip capsule, water can damage the remote board sitting beside the chip, and a blade worn down over many years can stop turning the barrel fully. The immobiliser light is the best clue. On most cars it goes out a moment after the ignition is switched on when the chip is recognised, and stays on or flashes when it is not.
How Transponder Key Programming Works
A transponder key is two jobs in one, cutting the blade and programming the chip. Both happen at the car in a single visit.
