How CUPRA Key Systems Work by Generation
A CUPRA key has two parts that must both match the car. The blade opens the locks, and the transponder chip is registered to the immobiliser, which on the MQB platform shares a security code with the engine and gearbox control units. That shared code is why a CUPRA key needs the right data read from the car, not just a blank key.
Before 2018 Cupra was the performance badge on SEAT models such as the Leon Cupra and Ateca Cupra. Those cars carry SEAT keys, which are covered in detail on our SEAT key replacement page. CUPRA became its own brand in 2018, with the Ateca first and the Formentor and new Leon following in 2020.
MQB keys with a Megamos AES chip cover the CUPRA Ateca, the Leon and the Formentor, including the e-Hybrid and VZ versions. These are flip keys or keyless keys with an HU162T blade, cut to code at the vehicle through our car key cutting service. With one working key, a spare is added through the diagnostic socket. With no key, the security data is read from the instrument cluster first, which is why all keys lost jobs are quoted before we travel.
The newest CUPRA systems use a Hitag Pro chip on later MQB cars and the MEB platform on the electric Born and Tavascan. Key adding on some of these still runs through the manufacturer online system, so the registration is checked first and we tell you on the phone if a dealer is the only route.
