Mercedes Sprinter Key Replacement Leeds and What It Costs

September 2026· 9 min read· Van Keys

A Mercedes Sprinter key costs from £175 in Leeds with no VAT, cut and coded at the van. A spare taken while a working key still exists starts at £130, and a van with every key gone starts at £200. A main dealer prices the same key at £400 to £700 before VAT.

The work happens where the van is parked. Most of what comes up when a Sprinter key is searched for is either a workshop somewhere else in the country or a service that asks for the key to be posted to it, and neither is much use to a van sitting on a job in Leeds. A Sprinter does not have to be recovered anywhere to get a key.

One thing is worth checking before booking anybody at all, and it is the generation of the van. That is covered below, along with the cases where a repair costs a fraction of a new key.

What a Sprinter Key Costs

Six jobs cover almost every Sprinter call in Leeds, and only two of them are a new key. Every figure is fixed on the phone from the registration and none of it carries VAT or a call out fee.

The jobWhat is donePrice
Opening the vanNon destructive entry, no key madeFrom £65
Fob repair or resyncCase, buttons, blade or a fob out of syncFrom £75

Replacement keyCut, coded and tested at the vanFrom £175
Ignition or module faultDiagnosed and repaired on siteFrom £175
Every key goneFull module sync, all old keys deletedFrom £200

The two cheapest lines on that table are the ones most people never ask about. A van that will not open and a fob that has stopped responding are both a long way short of needing a key made, and they are quoted separately for that reason.

Where the dealer number comes from

A main dealer prices a Sprinter key at £400 to £700 before VAT, and the van has to reach the workshop. That figure covers a franchised premises, a booked slot and a key ordered in from the manufacturer. The coding itself is the same piece of work in both places.

Which Sprinter You Have and Why It Matters

The generation decides which module the key is written to, and that decides both the price and the time. It is the first question asked on the phone and it takes a registration to answer.

The registration comes first

It identifies the generation and the module the key has to be written to, which is what fixes the price. A quote given without it is a guess that moves on arrival.

The earlier Sprinter

Key data sits in a module on the van itself and is read and written at the roadside. These are the most common Sprinters in Leeds and the most straightforward of the lot.

The later shape

Holds its key data differently and needs the van specific module rather than a general purpose programmer. It is still done at the van, and it takes longer.

The very newest vans

A small number of the most recent Sprinters sit outside what can be written at the roadside at all. That is established on the phone rather than discovered in your yard.

Most guides written about Sprinter keys mention in passing that later vans are harder and then leave it there, which helps nobody standing next to one. Giving the registration up front turns that vague warning into a yes or a no before anybody travels, and it costs a phone call.

When a Repair Beats a Replacement

Four Sprinter key faults are repairs rather than replacements, and all four start at £75 instead of £175. The difference is whether the van still recognises the key.

The emergency blade has worn

The metal blade inside the fob wears like any other key and eventually will not turn. A fresh blade cut into the same fob keeps the electronics and starts at £75.

The case has broken

Sprinter fobs live in work trousers and get dropped on concrete. A split case or a loose blade hinge is a housing swap, and the original electronics move across into it.

Buttons have stopped responding

A worn button membrane is a repair, not a new key. The van still recognises the key, so nothing has to be coded again and no old keys need deleting.

The van no longer recognises it at all

This is the one that is genuinely a replacement. Where the key has lost its identity to the module rather than simply lost a button, a new key has to be written in.

The test is simple enough to run yourself. If the van starts when the key is in the ignition but the buttons do nothing, or the blade turns badly but the engine fires, the electronics are alive and the fault is mechanical. That is a repair, and quoting it as a new key is how people end up paying twice what the job needed.

What Happens When Every Key Is Gone

Four steps at the roadside, in this order, with the paperwork first. None of it requires the van to be moved and none of it requires a key number from anybody.

Proof of ownership is checked first

The V5C and photo identification in the same name, before anything is opened. On a fleet or leased Sprinter that document usually sits in an office, and chasing it is what actually delays the job.

The van is opened without damage

Picked or decoded rather than forced. No glass, no drilling and no marks on a signwritten panel, which matters on a van that carries a business name down the side.

The key data is taken from the van

There is no original to copy, so the information comes from the vehicle itself. That is the step that makes a missing key number irrelevant.

Old keys are deleted as the new one is written

Every previously known key stops working at the same moment the new one starts. A key lost on a site or taken with a bag of tools cannot be used on that van again.

Load area and side door locks are included in the same visit. A Sprinter carries deadlocks and slam locks that the ignition key does not always operate, and a van that starts but cannot be loaded is not back in service. The wider van key replacement service covers the same ground across other commercial vehicles.

A Key Stuck or Snapped in the Ignition

Stop turning it. A key that will not come out of a Sprinter barrel is almost always a worn blade or a tiring ignition switch, and forcing it is what turns a £175 repair into a barrel replacement.

Both faults are diagnosed at the van. A worn blade is cut fresh into the existing fob, and a failing switch is repaired or replaced on site without the van going anywhere. A blade that has already snapped off inside the barrel is extracted rather than drilled, which keeps the original lock and avoids a second bill for a new one.

The warning sign comes early

A Sprinter key that has started needing a wiggle, or that only turns in one particular position, is telling you something several weeks before it strands the van. That is the cheapest possible moment to deal with it and almost nobody does.

A Sprinter Off the Road

A Sprinter key is between £130 and £200, and a day of a Sprinter standing still is usually worth several times that before a cancelled job is counted. That is the number that should decide how this is handled.

Attendance is about 30 minutes

Across the Leeds postcodes, and the same on an evening or a weekend. A Sprinter found dead on a Sunday night is the one that otherwise costs the whole of Monday.

The work is 45 minutes to an hour and a half

Forty five minutes with a working key present, longer where every key is gone and the module has to be resynced from scratch.

Nothing is recovered and nothing is posted

The van stays on the drive, the site or the depot. Recovery on a long wheelbase Sprinter is its own cost and its own delay before a key has even been discussed.

The key is tested before it is paid for

Doors, load area, ignition and the remote, on the van, with you there. A key that starts the engine and leaves the rear doors unusable is not a finished job.

Evenings, weekends and bank holidays are covered at the same price, because the alternative is a van that cannot work on the next trading day. Timing changes the inconvenience and it does not change the figure.
