Audi Key Replacement Cost by Model and Immobiliser Type

September 2026· 9 min read· Cost Guide

An Audi key replacement costs from £150 in Leeds with no VAT, cut and coded at the vehicle, and the year of the car moves that figure far more than the model does. A main dealer prices the same key at £300 to £700 before VAT.

Most published Audi pricing is a table of model names, from an A1 at the bottom to an R8 at the top. It looks authoritative and it answers the wrong question. A 2018 A3 and a 2018 A8 cost about the same to key. A 2008 A3 and a 2018 A3 do not.

What actually sets the price is the immobiliser generation the car was built with, and there are three of them. Working out which one is on your driveway takes the year and nothing else.

What an Audi Key Costs by Immobiliser Generation

Three generations of immobiliser cover every Audi on the road, and the generation sets the price because it sets the equipment. The model names in each row are there to help you place your car, not to change the figure.

Prices are from, at your vehicle, with no VAT and no call out fee. Opening a locked Audi with no key made starts at £65.

Every figure includes the blank, the cutting where the key carries a blade, the coding and travel to the vehicle. The later the platform, the longer the job takes and the more of it happens through the module rather than the diagnostic port.

Against the published national figures

Model based tables put an Audi key between roughly £290 and £900, and a main dealer quotes £300 to £700 plus VAT. Both are pricing a dealer supplied key with the overhead attached to it. The coding is identical work wherever it happens.

Why Pricing by Model Gets It Wrong

Almost every Audi price list published online runs down the model range from the smallest car to the fastest one. It is the wrong axis, and it sends people to the wrong expectation in both directions.

The badge barely moves the price

An A3 and an A6 of the same year sit on the same immobiliser and take the same equipment. The saloon costs more to buy and it does not cost more to key.

The year moves it a great deal

The same A3 nameplate spans three immobiliser generations across its life, and the gap between the oldest and the newest is the whole spread on this page.

The key type moves it too

A proximity Advanced Key carries a pairing step that an ordinary remote does not, and that is fitted by option rather than by model line.

Which is why model tables mislead

A list running from A1 up to R8 implies the badge is the variable. Two cars on that list built in the same year usually cost the same, and the table cannot show you that.

The practical effect is that an owner of an older A6 arrives expecting to pay a large car price and does not, and an owner of a brand new A1 arrives expecting a small car price and finds the platform is the newest one. Neither of them was badly served by the garage. They were badly served by the table.

How to Tell Which System Your Audi Has

Four checks, and the first one answers it on its own for most cars. None of them needs the bonnet opening.

Start with the year on the V5C

It answers the question on its own in almost every case, because Audi moved the whole range onto each new system within a model year or two.

Look at how you unlock it

A key you press and then turn is an ordinary remote. A car that unlocks as you touch the handle with the key in a pocket has Advanced Key, and that is priced separately.

Check the blade

Earlier cars carry a flat blade you can see. On many later cars the blade folds into the fob or hides inside a proximity key as an emergency blade only.

Or just read out the registration

It identifies the platform, the key type and the equipment needed in one step, which is how the price gets fixed before anybody sets off.

The reason this matters before you phone anybody is that it is the difference between a fixed price and a guess. A quote given without the year or the registration will move on arrival, and it usually moves in one direction.

Advanced Key Against an Ordinary Remote

Audi fits two quite different kinds of key and they are priced differently because they are different pieces of work. Which one you have is visible without opening anything.

An ordinary remote key

Buttons to lock and unlock, a blade for the barrel and a transponder chip the immobiliser reads. Coded through the diagnostic port on most generations.

An Advanced Key

Unlocks on approach and starts on a button, with the key never leaving a pocket. It carries an extra pairing step on top of ordinary transponder coding.

Why it is priced separately

The proximity function is a second conversation with a second part of the car. Pairing it is real work whether or not a new key is being supplied.

The emergency blade inside it

Every Advanced Key hides a metal blade released by a catch, which opens the driver door when the fob battery dies. Worth finding before you need it.

Pairing an Advanced Key starts at £120 where the car already has a working key, and it is the step most often left out of a cheap quote. A proximity key that starts the car but will not unlock it on approach has been coded and not paired, and the job is not finished. Smart key programming covers what that second step involves.

Mobile Against the Dealer

The same Audi key, priced two ways, and the difference is almost entirely overhead rather than capability.

Where the dealer money goes

A franchised workshop, a booked slot and a key ordered in from the manufacturer, then twenty percent on the whole thing. The coding itself is the same piece of work in both places.

The car has to get there

On an Audi with every key gone that means recovery, which is its own bill and its own delay before the key has even been discussed.

The wait is the real cost

Keys are ordered rather than stocked, so a dealer job is usually days. Work at the vehicle is the same afternoon and the car does not move.

What is identical either way

The key is coded to the same module with equipment doing the same job, and the car cannot tell the difference afterwards.

The full breakdown of where that gap comes from sits in the dealer comparison. The short version is that a franchised workshop is a building you are paying for, and a van is not.

When Every Audi Key Is Gone

From £175, at the roadside, and the car does not go anywhere. Four steps, with the paperwork first rather than last.

Proof of ownership comes first

The V5C and photo identification in the same name, before anything is opened. On a lease or company Audi that document sits in an office rather than the car.

The car is opened without damage

Picked or decoded rather than forced, with no drilling and nothing touched on the glass or the trim.

The data comes off the vehicle

There is no key to copy, so the information is taken from the car itself. On the later platforms that means reading the module directly rather than through the port.

Old keys are deleted as the new one is written

Every previously known key stops working at the same moment, so a set lost in a gym bag cannot be used on the car later.

This is the job that makes the case for a spare. A second key cut alongside a working one starts at £120, and the same Audi with nothing left to copy from starts at £175 and takes twice as long. The gap gets wider on the newer platforms rather than narrower, so the longer a late model Audi runs on one key the more that decision costs.
