How Subaru Key Systems Work by Generation
A Subaru key has two parts that must both match the car. The blade is cut to the locks, and the transponder chip in the head is registered to the immobiliser. Subaru has moved through four chip families since the late 1990s, and the family decides which tool codes the key and what a Subaru key costs.
Texas 4D keys, about 1998 to 2011, sit in the Impreza, Forester, Legacy and Outback of that period. The early cars use the 4D60 chip and later ones the 4D62. These fixed code chips are coded through the diagnostic socket, and older chip keys like these are handled by our transponder key programming service, usually in well under an hour.
G chip keys, about 2011 to 2018, use an 80 bit Texas chip. The first XV, the Forester from 2013, the Impreza of that era, the Outback and the BRZ all carry it. Bladed Subaru remotes use the DAT17 blade, while older plain keys use the NSN19 profile. Both blades are cut at the vehicle as part of our car key cutting service.
H chip keys, about 2017 onwards, use a 128 bit Texas chip with stronger encryption. The second XV, the Forester e-Boxer from 2019, the latest Outback and the Crosstrek that replaced the XV in 2024 use H chip smart keys with a TOY48 emergency blade inside.
