What Goes Wrong With a Car Door Lock
The lock barrel in a car door is a small mechanical cylinder full of spring loaded wafers. When the correct key is inserted, the wafers line up and the barrel turns, which moves a rod or cable connected to the latch inside the door. Most door lock faults come from one of three places, the barrel itself, the link between the barrel and the latch, or the latch mechanism deeper in the door.
The most common cause today is simply lack of use. Remote central locking means the driver door barrel may not be turned for years. Dirt, road salt and moisture build up inside, the wafers corrode, and the first time the remote battery dies the key will not turn at all. Cold weather makes it worse, because water inside the barrel freezes overnight.
Attempted theft is the second big cause. A screwdriver forced into the barrel, or a lock that has been punched, leaves the door either impossible to open with the key or impossible to lock. Wear is the third. An old key and an old barrel wear together until the key only works at a certain angle.
