Do Halfords Replace Car Keys? The Leeds Answer

September 2026· 7 min read· Advice

No. Halfords does not cut or program car keys. A Halfords store will change the battery in a key fob for £7 plus the battery, and it will sell a replacement key for a roof box or a bike rack cut to code. It will not produce a key that starts a vehicle.

That surprises a lot of people, because Halfords does almost everything else motoring related. Bulbs, wipers, batteries, dash cams, servicing. Car keys are the gap, and the reason is equipment rather than willingness. Cutting a blade to a lock and coding a chip to an immobiliser needs machinery and software that retail stores do not carry.

This guide sets out exactly what Halfords does with car keys, what it costs, why a fresh battery sometimes does not fix the key anyway, and who actually replaces a car key in Leeds when Halfords cannot.

Do Halfords Replace Car Keys

No. A Halfords store cannot cut a car key, cannot code one to a vehicle and cannot help at all when every key has been lost. The only car key service on the counter is a battery change in a key fob.

Halfords is clear about this in its own guidance, which points anyone asking about a replacement key towards a live chat rather than a store booking. There is no key cutting machine and no key programming equipment in the retail estate.

The short answer

Halfords replaces key fob batteries for £7 plus the battery and sells cut to code keys for its own roof boxes and bike racks. It does not cut, copy, code or replace a key that starts a vehicle. That work belongs to a mobile auto locksmith or a main dealer.

What Halfords Does Do With Car Keys

Four things, and all four are genuinely useful in the right situation. If the problem really is a flat battery, a store is quicker and cheaper than calling anybody out.

Key fob battery replacement

Fitted in store for £7 plus the cost of the battery, usually £8 to £12 all in. It takes five to ten minutes while you wait and is subject to an inspection of the key first.

Accessory keys cut to code

Replacement keys for Halfords roof boxes, roof bars, bike racks and tool chests, cut from the code stamped on the lock rather than from the vehicle.

Loose key fob batteries

CR2032, CR2025 and the other common cells are sold over the counter for drivers who would rather change the battery themselves.

Anti-theft pouches

Signal blocking Faraday pouches sit on the shelf at around £6, which protect a keyless fob from relay theft but do nothing to replace a key.

The battery service comes with one published condition worth knowing before making the trip. Halfords states the service is refused where the reprogramming has to be completed by a dealer, which rules out several keys that lose their pairing the moment power is removed.

The Three Halfords Key Services People Confuse

Halfords does sell replacement keys, which is exactly why this question keeps being asked. Three separate key services sit under that heading and none of them is a car key.

Locking wheel nut keys

The splined adaptor that removes the security bolts on alloy wheels. Halfords sources one from the key number stamped on the original, or replaces the wheel nut set outright. Nothing to do with starting the car.

Roof box and bike rack keys

Cut to the code stamped on the lock rather than to the vehicle. Halfords sells these for its own roof boxes, roof bars and cycle carriers.

Bike lock keys

Cut from the eight digit code on the card supplied with the lock. Around £17 per key from specialist cutters, and again cut to a code rather than to a vehicle.

Car keys

The one Halfords does not do. A key that starts a vehicle needs a blade cut to the lock and a transponder coded to the immobiliser, and neither happens in a retail store.

The distinction that matters is what the key is cut to. All three of the first group are cut to a code stamped on a lock or a bolt. A car key is cut to the vehicle and then coded to it, which is a different job with different equipment.

What Halfords Cannot Do

Everything that makes a key start a car sits outside what a store can offer. These four are the jobs people most often arrive hoping for.

Cutting a car key blade

No key cutting machine capable of cutting a vehicle blade to a lock sits in a Halfords store. This applies to the simplest mechanical key as much as the newest one.

Programming a transponder

A chip key has to be coded to the immobiliser with diagnostic equipment. Halfords stores do not carry that equipment and do not offer the service.

Pairing a smart or keyless key

Proximity keys and flip keys are paired through the vehicle security modules. This is dealer or auto locksmith work and is not available in retail.

All keys lost

When no working key exists the new key has to be generated from the vehicle identification number and the old keys deleted. Nothing about that job can happen in a store.

Why a New Battery Sometimes Does Not Fix the Key

This is the most common way a Halfords trip ends in a phone call to a locksmith. A fresh battery goes in, the fob still does nothing, and the assumption is that the new battery is faulty. Usually it is not.

Three faults look exactly like a flat battery from the driver seat. Worn contacts under the rubber buttons, where the conductive pad has rubbed away after years of pressing. A cracked solder joint on the circuit board, common on fobs that have been dropped. Water ingress, which corrodes the board quietly over months.

There is also a fourth possibility that is not a fault at all. Some fobs lose their pairing with the vehicle when power is disconnected and need resyncing afterwards. That is programming work rather than retail work.

What this costs in Leeds

Key fob repair starts at £85 with no VAT and is carried out at the vehicle. Buttons, boards and cases are repaired rather than replaced wherever the fob allows it, which is normally cheaper than buying a new remote and coding it in.

Can Timpson Replace a Car Key Instead

Timpson goes further than Halfords and does cut and copy car keys in branch, which makes it a reasonable option for a straightforward spare. There is one condition in its own guidance that decides everything, and most people do not read it until they are standing at the counter.

A working copy of the key has to be brought in. Timpson duplicates from an existing key rather than generating one from the vehicle. If the key is lost, snapped beyond use or was never in your hands, there is nothing to copy from.

The line that decides it

Neither Halfords nor Timpson can help when every key is lost. That job needs the vehicle identification number, access to the immobiliser and the ability to delete the missing keys so they no longer start the car. It is mobile auto locksmith work or main dealer work, and nothing else.

Who Can Actually Replace a Car Key in Leeds

Complex platforms that need module work start higher, at £250. The full breakdown by key type and by job sits in the Leeds auto locksmith cost guide.

The Costs That Catch People Out

Four charges turn a quoted key price into a larger final bill, and all four are avoidable. They are worth knowing before ringing anybody, not just before ringing a dealer.

Recovery to a garage or dealer

Around £75 in normal hours, more in the evening, at weekends and on bank holidays, plus a per mile charge on top. It applies whenever the work cannot happen where the car is parked.

Immobiliser work billed separately

Reprogramming an immobiliser is commonly quoted around £300, and replacing one runs far higher. A quote for the key alone is not a quote for the job.

The fob battery added on

A coin cell worth a few pounds appearing on an invoice at around £15. Small on its own, and a reliable sign of how the rest of the bill was built.

Key cover sold alongside

An annual policy of roughly £36 with an excess attached. Worth reading against the cost of simply cutting a spare key once.

None of the four applies to a mobile auto locksmith job in Leeds. The work happens where the car is parked so there is nothing to recover, immobiliser access is part of the programming rather than a separate line, the battery is inside the price and no policy is sold alongside it.

What to Have Ready Before You Call

Four pieces of information turn a vague estimate into a fixed price, and gathering them takes about a minute.

The make, model and year

These three decide the key type and therefore the price. A quote given without them is an estimate rather than a price.

The registration

The registration confirms the exact build and the security platform fitted to that car, which is what sets the programming time.

The V5C logbook

Proof that the vehicle is yours. A finance agreement works where the V5C sits with the lender, alongside photo identification in the same name.

Whether a working key exists

This is the single biggest price factor. A spare cut alongside a working key costs far less than a job where every key is gone.

Keys for 34 vehicle makes are cut and programmed across the city, at home, at work or at the roadside, in every Leeds LS postcode.
