How Jeep Key Systems Work by Generation
A Jeep key has two parts that must both match the vehicle. The blade is cut to the locks, and the transponder chip is registered to the immobiliser or, on newer Jeeps, to the radio frequency hub. Jeep has used three chip families in UK models since the late 1990s, and the family decides how a Jeep key is coded and what it costs.
Texas 4D64 keys, about 1998 to 2004, sit in the Cherokee, Grand Cherokee and Wrangler of that period. These fixed code chips use the Y170 blade and are coded through the diagnostic socket. Older chip keys like these are handled by our transponder key programming service, usually in well under an hour.
Philips ID46 keys, about 2005 to 2017, cover the Wrangler JK, the Grand Cherokee WK, the Cherokee KK, the Patriot and the first Compass. Many of these Jeeps use a fobik, a remote with no blade that pushes into a slot in the dash, with a separate emergency blade for the door. The blade is cut to code at the vehicle through our car key cutting service.
Hitag AES keys, about 2014 onwards, arrived with the Grand Cherokee WK2 facelift and the Cherokee KL, and continue in the Renegade, the second Compass, the Wrangler JL and the Avenger. Most are keyless smart keys with a SIP22 emergency blade, the same profile as Fiat. From 2018 a secure gateway locks the diagnostic socket until authorised access is made.
